Donald Trump isn’t taking the nuclear option off the table when dealing with North Korea.
Trump tweeted, “My first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal. It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before...Hopefully we will never have to use this power, but there will never be a time that we are not the most powerful nation in the world!”
Trump’s tweet comes as the tensions between the U.S. and North Korea increases.
Last Friday, all 15 member nations on the United Nations (UN) Security Council voted to sanction North Korea after a series of nuclear test.
Joining in on the vote for sanctions was China and Russia, which are generally not in favor of tougher sanctions against North Korea.
Three days after the UN Security Council vote, the Washington Post reported that North Korea has a miniaturize nuclear warhead that can fit in a missile that can reach the mainland of the United States.
The report prompted Trump to warn North Korea leader Kim Jong-un that any act of war against the U.S. will be met with “fire,” “fury,” and “power.”
It is a response that resulted in Senator John McCain, who is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, telling KTAR Radio that Trump needs to calm down and try the “old walk softly with a big stick" approach.
The concern is that the young North Korean leader will act on his threats due to his fear the U.S. wants to remove him from power.
It is a concern that was heightened after Jong-un threatened to blow up the U.S. territory of Guam.
However, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is telling everyone they should remain calm.
Time Magazine quoted Tillerson as saying, “Americans should sleep well at night. What the president is doing is sending a strong message to North Korea in language that Kim Jong Un can understand, because he doesn’t seem to understand diplomatic language.”
